In your share this week:
- Snow Peas (remember, they are supposed to be flat, the entire pod is edible)
- Shell Peas (don't eat the shell)
- Cilantro
- Dill
- Kale
- Garlic, freshly dug, Polish Jenn variety
- Baby Carrots, a small bunch
- Napa Cabbage (last of the season) -OR- Swiss Chard*
*There weren't enough cabbages left to give one to every member. We opted to go ahead and give out what we could and give Swiss chard to rest. What you get in your share will be luck of the draw.
Our big news of the week is that all the garlic has been dug up, bunched, and is hanging to dry. That's about 12,000 bulbs of garlic! Thanks to some amazing workers, this project was finished in just 3 days! Incredible! Now it needs to "cure" (dry out so it can store longer) for a few weeks and then we'll start cleaning it up for your shares and to sell. About a third of it will be replanted later in the fall for next year's crop.
We are starting to hear that people are getting tired of all the greens you are getting in your shares. Yes, it has been a great year for kale, Swiss chard, cabbages and salad so far. This is due to the cooler temps we had for so long. We really haven't had the bug problems of years past, which is so nice. The down side to the cooler weather is that the heat loving crops are coming a long more slowly, such as: summer squash, zucchini, cucumbers and our famous French fillet beans. These vegetables will just take a little while longer before they are ready. Meanwhile, we are enjoying the greens and the peas. Remember, chard and kale can be blanched and frozen to add later to hardy winter soups.
If you are concerned about eating all the herbs in your share before they go bad, these also freeze very well. I always think what a shame it is that we can't get the cilantro to last until the tomatoes are ready (it bolts so quickly in this heat), but if you freeze the cilantro it can be thawed later for fresh tomato salsa. Mmmmm.
Reminder: there will be NO CSA delivery the week of August 18th, 2 weeks from now.
We'll be taking tomorrow off (can you believe it?) and going to the fair. Our daughter is playing with her high school bluegrass band under the big top. She's the lead fiddle player. All those years of violin and piano lessons are really starting to pay off.
Have a great week and enjoy.
Tara
