Greetings! We are excited to announce our first delivery of produce for the 2007 season. A lot of food is growing out in the fields and greenhouses. Thus far, we’ve planted the following:
Salad Greens (more than 8,000 row feet)
Other greens (spinach, chard, and kale)
Three varieties of peas (snow, snap, and shell)
Our famous fillet beans
Hundreds of tomato plants and thousands of basil plants
Thousands of onions, leeks, and garlic
400 pounds of yellow and red seed potatoes
Thousands of row feet of beets and carrots
Hundreds of pepper plants
Hundreds of zucchini and summer squash
Herbs (cilantro, parsley, dill)
Radishes and Turnips
Scallions
Boc choi and Chinese Cabbage
Please do not be disappointed in the smaller size of the first week’s shares. Even with the extreme growing methods we use on the farm, the veggies take their own time growing in this climate. Things usually start slow and then rapidly heat up. The size of your share will increase, to the point of “over-flowing” at times.
This week your share will include:
• Salad Mix
• Boc Choi
• A small bunch of Radishes (purple/red) and Japanese Turnips
(white) – To preserve freshness, cut off the green leafy tops ASAP.
I love eating the turnips (and radishes too, if I’m in the mood for something with more kick) thinly sliced on a toasted bagel sandwich with cream cheese, deli turkey meat, and a bit of salad mix.
My favorite way to use the boc choi is in stir-fry and egg rolls. I like to double the recipe for the egg roll filling and freeze it for later. If you have any other ideas, please share them with me and I’ll pass them on to our CSA members. The recipes for these favorites are on this website.
In the near future expect to continue receiving these vegetables as well as spinach, kale, and Swiss chard.
