We did it again! (A repeat of the potato planting miracle of 2009.)
In one afternoon, with the help of 8 friends and neighbors, we planted about 400 pounds of potatoes.
Getting the potatoes planted has been at the top of Shain's priority list for some time now. But the weather has not been cooperative so it's taken a while longer than he'd like. (I feel like we've been saying that a lot lately.)
This year we opened up a new field for growing crops - field #4. This is a huge undertaking to say the least. It involves many steps: first we "picked rocks", then it was plowed and disked, then we picked rocks again, and finally Shain tills the ground to prepare it for planting. Of course, most of these steps require the ground be dry, thus the reason the process has taken so long this wet spring. Field #4 will continue to be a lot of work until we've spent years adding compost, removing more rocks, and weeding. I don't even want to think about the weeding.
Back to planting potatoes. The job is all but done. We have one more row to plant and hope to finish that tomorrow when the ground drys out again. Yukon Golds and Red Norlands. All but done!
